“DEVOLUTION“, a group show featuring the work of Tina Lugo, Benjamin Constantine, Smithe and Lauren YS opened tonight at Fifty24SF Gallery in San Francisco. The highly anticipated exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists, each presenting works that explore surreal characters where the human visage takes on a bizarre new form. "DEVOLUTION", presented in association with Upper Playground, is showing at Fifty24SF Gallery through mid-September.

Devolution: Group Exhibition at Fifty24SF Gallery

Fifty24SF Gallery in association with Upper Playground presents "Devolultion", group exhibition featuring the work of Smithe, Tina Lugo, Lauren YS and Benjamin Constantine. "Devolution" Opens August 1st 2015, 7pm at Fifty24SF Gallery.

About The Artists:

Benjamin Constantine: Benjamin is a predominantly self taught artist living and working in Brisbane, Australia. In his pieces, casts of anonymous characters interact, in states of anxiety or elation, elements within or around them often becoming involved and synonymous. Constantine's work has appeared in VICE comics, the Fantagraphics's publication 'Beasts!2' and in 'Secret Prison' amongst others.

Tina Lugo: Tina's work expresses a sexual and often tongue-in- cheek humor fueled by cartoons, animation and early 90’s television. The use of enamel and plexiglass in her work is to suggest that the smooth, hyper-gloss finishing of a world that allures us will always be beneath a transparent barrier we can touch but never enter-a replication of the voyeuristic qualities we all posses. Her style references and pays homage to her variety of modern influences which include: Takashi Murakami, Toshio Saeki, Hanna Barbera, Japanese animation, and Henry Darger. Tina Lugo was born and raised in the Bronx and recently moved to Portland. She studied at the School of Visual Arts. 

Smithe: Born and raise in Mexico City, Smithe begain drawing around age 12. Influenced by the local graffiti artists in his neighborhood, Smithe would walk the city and look at the graffiti on the walls. He was intrigued by how quick you could get a message out. Smithe's art has opened many doors for him as he has traveled the world showing his work, with shows in England, Belgium and Germany.

Lauren YS: Lauren YS is a Bay Area based fine artist, illustrator and muralist. For "Devolution,"  Lauren has collected a host of her characters in states that play off her interpretation of the word: entanglement, malaise or playful struggle. YS graduated from Stanford in 2013 and showed her first artworks at FIFTY24SF. She has since completed a residency in Vienna at Rabbit Eye Movement and painted at several international mural festivals.

Brazilian Duo, Bicicleta Sem Freio's First US Solo Show at Fifty24SF Gallery, San Francisco

Fifty24SF Gallery in association with Upper Playground and JUSTKIDS is proud to present “This Is Not A Poster” by Brazilian duo, Bicicleta Sem Freio, opening May 1st 2015.  The exhibition at Fifty24SF Gallery in San Francisco will be their first solo show in the United States.

Recognized worldwide for their expressive line work and warm, vibrant color schemes, the multi talented Brazilian illustrators and muralists, Douglas de Castro and Renato Perreira will showcase original work inspired by their love of Poster Art.

Over the past decade, Bicicleta Sem Freio has been pursued to realize posters for Vampire Weekend, Jurassic 5, Kings of Leon and Beck among many others, and have produced custom work for some of the best musical talents in the industry.  In continuation of their creative output inspired by music, the artists aim to playfully pay visual homage to the Art of music posters by presenting a body of work for fictitious bands and themes.

“The essential idea is that we love posters and we past almost 10 years doing it for local bands and festivals and we wanted to do a show with fake posters with no info, the letterings are only ornamental and don’t mean anything” -BSF

Bicicleta Sem Freio’s signature style, which draws references from their roots in music, Brazilian culture, their love for 80s and pop culture iconography, have been emerging on large-scale public installations all over the world, including one of the largest artist mural in Downtown, Los Angeles just painted last year.

In conjunction to their first ever show in the United States, a second mural is planned for Bicicleta Sem Freio in San Francisco, with more information to be announced soon via Upper Playground.

PREVIEW FOR HAJIME SORAYAMA PRINT SHOW – OPENING APRIL 4TH 2015

This Saturday April 4th at 7pm, Fifty24SF Gallery in association with Upper Playground presents a print show by renowned artist Hajime Sorayama. The influential pin-up artist, recognized for his “sexy robot” paintings, gives fans and collectors a rare opportunity to see his art in person, as this is the Vargas Award winner’s first time showing his work in San Francisco.  A selected collection of new and old prints will be available for purchase at Fifty24SF in Lower Haight, San Francisco. Fifty24SF Gallery in association with Upper Playground is pleased to present a special print show by renowned Japanese artist, Hajime Sorayama, opening April 4th, 2015. Sorayama is recognized world-wide for his uniquely imaginative, erotic style of paintings. The sleek chrome aesthetic of robotics in a hyper-sexualized feminine form has been a signature style for Sorayama that has spanned over 4 decades. Sorayama is a Vargas Award winner, the highest achievement in air-brush artistry. His art displayed in permanent collections at the MOMA, Smithsonian Institute and the US Library of Congress.

Considered as one of the most influential pin-up artists of our time, Sorayama will be making available for the time in San Francisco, a selected collection of his new and old prints. This will be a rare chance for his fans and collectors to see Sorayama’s work in person.

'THÉSIS' by renowned Mexican street artist Jesús Benítez

We are pleased to announce our upcoming solo-show entitled ‘Thésis’ featuring original artwork by renowned Mexican street artist, muralist and fine artist Jesús Benítez, formerly known by the moniker, Dhear. Having completed one of his most challenging tasks to date, a large mural for the Hospital Homeopático in Mexico City D.F. Preview: Sage Vaughn's 'Runaways' Opening Nov. 19th

Here is a peek at some of the paintings that Sage Vaughn will be exhibiting at our FIFTY24SF Gallery starting Saturday, November 19. Runaways will feature new paintings, some of Vaughn’s signature envelope works, and a hand-finished print in an edition of 24.

FIFTY24SF Gallery is proud to present, Runaways, a group of new paintings by Los Angeles based fine artist, Sage Vaughn. This exhibition marks Vaughn's first solo show in San Francisco and first solo show in the states in 4 years. Runaways opens November 19, 2011.

After two successful exhibitions at London's Lazarides Gallery and The Outsiders, Vaughn returns to the United States with a body of new work. The first group of work in Runaways echoes the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "children are all foreigners." The work illustrates the cast off minutia in our midst, the runaways, the street urchins, scamps, and hooligans that are often ignored. The focus is on the individuals, the small things. Vaughn uses song birds, feral parrots and escaped exotic pets on their own or, at times, with an accomplice, in an obscure dystopian setting. Here the viewer can explore sentiments of rebellion, survival, isolation and stolen sweetness the birds experience as they go about their secret lives above our heads.

The second group of paintings looks at the concept of the fleeting existence of the butterfly. A butterfly is only in this form for a comparatively short period during its life span; during which, it lives to fly, to mate, and to reproduce before it fades. constructing a single visual movement based on the compulsion of the individuals illustrates the driving force behind their transformation. in these works  assembles the inconsequential to a point where they can emphasize something more powerful and instinctual. 

Runaways will feature works in a variety of mediums, including a new series of paintings and Vaughn's iconic envelope paintings. There will also be a large-sized hand-painted print in an edition of 24.

Sage Vaughn will also present a second exhibition at FIFTY24SF Gallery starting on December 16th, 2011, featuring special installations and conceptual works. 

Sage Vaughn was born in Jackson, Oregon. He has exhibited throughout the world, including Lazarides Gallery and The Outsiders in London, Galerie Bertrand and Gruner in Geneva, Art Agents Gallery in Hamburg, Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, and DACTYL Gallery in New York.

Opening Night Photos from Andrea Sonnenberg's 'My So Called Life'

SF-based photographer  aka Teen Witch opened a new show at our FIFTY24SF last night, with a large crowd coming out on what appears to be our first day of Fall.

My So Called Life features 60 photographs from Sonnenberg’s body of work, each uniquely hand-printed at Hamburger Eyes lab in SF’s Mission District.

Andrea Sonnenberg aka Teen Witch Opening this Thursday Nov. 3rd

FIFTY24SF Gallery is proud to present, My So Called Life, the first solo show of San Francisco-based photographer, Andrea Sonnenberg aka Teen Witch. My So Called Life opens November 3, 2011.

My So Called Life will feature over 50 photographs from Sonnenberg’s body of work, each uniquely hand-printed at Hamburger Eyes lab in SF’s Mission District.

Significant buzz was built around Sonnenberg’s photography after exhibiting works at MOCA’s seminal Art In the Streets graffiti and street art survey, as well as works included in Barry McGee and Josh Lazcano’s “Let’s Go Bombing Tonight” show in Copenhagen, My So Called Life is an accumulation of Sonnenberg’s trademark portrait, graffiti, landscape, action, and day in the life photography. Building off the unique lineage of street photography in San Francisco, Sonnenberg’s unfiltered, raw, and often humorous work has made her an active documentarian of a new generation of SF youth culture. Her intimate portraits of her friends and of herself are often candid, revealing a truth about both the city and the personalities that exist inside. The photos present a world of unbridled optimism and a carefree rebirth of homegrown bohemian culture in the midst of a city preoccupied by technological innovation.

“San Francisco has a lot to do with how I work and what I document,” Sonnenberg says. “There is this energy here, this vibe, that is impenetrable. People born here are obsessed with being native and that sense of pride also shows in people’s actions, which I love to capture.”

Andrea Sonnenberg aka Teen Witch has shown at MOCA in Los Angeles, V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, and Ed. Varie in New York City.

Andrea Sonnenberg grew up in San Francisco surrounded by photographers, graffiti artists, and musicians. By the age of 14, she was photographing and documenting the various exploits of her friends and contemporaries. Their penchant for getting into extremely unique and often dangerous situations became the basis of her body of work. Soon, she began to print her photos by hand at San Francisco’s famed Hamburger Eyes studio. Her work was included in MOCA’s 2010 Art In the Streets retrospective, the United States’ first graffiti and street art survey. Sonnenberg lives and works in San Francisco. This is her first solo exhibit at FIFTY24SF Gallery.
